Seems a few of us are into horror movies in a big way.

So, bring out your inner Jack Torrance, and take a seat at our own Overlook Hotel bar while we discuss all things horror. beer

Where should we begin?

Fave movies? Sub-genres? Scenes?

My personal fave horror franchise is Friday the 13th. I don't care how bad they get, I can't get enough of Jason. And while some will argue it's more sci-fi, John Carpenter's remake of The Thing is easily my fave movie of all time - of any genre. As far as sub-genres, slashers are very high on my list, but slightly more so is my love of zombie movies, and that has been that way long before the current zombie trendiness.

But, I am sure anyone taking the time to participate in this thread already knows those movies. What are your favorite obscure horror movies?

I'm partial to an 80's cheese flick called The Stuff, an amazing French movie called Inside, and High Tension. I can get way more obscure than that, as these should still be known to horror buffs, but unlikely casual movie fans know of them. Just starting out kind of easy.

Awesome stuff Ian cheers

I'm a horror fan through and through Very Happy

Favourite Franchise for me would probably be Chainsaw Massacre, same with Friday the 13th, it descended into badness pretty quickly but I love the original and kind of like the remakes as well.

I particualry love the 'cheesy' 80's horrot films which to me was the true age of horror, before it became big buisness. One of my favourites from this era is Sleep Away Camp which I just love, a classic twist as well Smile

I also love early Horror, Lugosi, Karloff, classics!

I too am also a massive Zombie fan, always have been, Although, for me, the perfect Zombie has yet to be made. I'm always on the look out for obscure films and obscure particularly Zombie films.

Here is a quick, off the top of my head list of a few Random Zombie films which merit a watch:
- Pontypool
- The Battery
- Wasting Away
- Stakeland (technically a vampire film, but it's more zombie to me Smile )

Just actually watched the Scout Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse which is worth a watch if you also like a bit of humour Smile

I would have to say my favorite franchise character is Myers cheers

My parents took me to see the original Halloween at the theatre when I was 8 or so . My mother was furious with my dad after it was said and done but , although it terrified me , I still loved it and was set on a path to horror from that moment on Twisted Evil  (Seeing Star Wars the year before had already sent me down the sci fi road Wink )

Unfortunately , the Halloween franchise certainly lacked quality in the films that Carpenter wasn't involved with (but don't bring up Part 3 , Season of The Witch nanny ) so it's hard for me to call it my fav franchise .

Overall , due to the number of actual good quality movies , the Friday The 13th movies are probably my favorite franchise . The only one I really dislike is Jason Goes To Hell (Part 9 ?) but Part 5 - A new Beginning never quite set right with me either . I actually enjoyed all of the later movies too - Part 6 and 10 are great to me because of the added humor  cheeky

My favorite is Part 7 The New Blood - Kane Hodder's 1st appearance as Jason and the movie I based my Halloween costume that I made on yay

I love The Texas Chainsaw movies too - part 1 and 2 are both classics but I can enjoy the follow ups as well (even though they are pretty awful  Razz )

My entire Halloween set up revolves around a slaughterhouse massacre setting - although I try to have tributes to a lot of classic movies , I still do my best to tie the into the scene so that everything "fits" together What a Face

I can see from both Ian and Alex's post's that I am going to get the great advice I need to help me find the more obscure stuff that I desperately try to find  clapping

Here are a few slightly obscure films I have watched recently that I enjoyed :

Wyrmwood Road of the Dead
Almost Mercy
The Loved Ones

and if you haven't ever seen :

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

it is certainly worth a watch What a Face

I am a huge fan of the classics like Karloff and Legosi  as well !

And the Romero Zombie's movies are always great Cool

Thank you James!!!! I have spent the last hour trying to remember the name of a certain Aussie film about zombie that breath fuel and couldn't remember the name! Wyrmwood!!!! Awesome film.

I'm a huge fan of Aussie films, they have a fantastic sense of humour and make great horror films also! Loved Ones is a classic! I think I may be shagging bird like that at the moment Neutral

I haven't forgotten this thread. Just had a busy last few days, and I want time to make a big post. Smile

James, High Tension is incredible, but has a twist ending that you'll love or hate. First three quarters more than lives up to its name though. Smile Made by Alexandre Aja, the guy who did the Hills Have Eyes and Piranha remakes.

Inside you'll want to make sure you have English subtitles if you don't know French, but it's easily one of the best horror films of the last few years.

Post by Ian_C Sat Dec 26, 2015 6:26 pm

Damn Alex, that'll be awesome. I want to meet John Carpenter one day.

Had a chance to meet Wes Craven at a con a few years ago, but his line was too long and I passed. Now we'll never have another chance. Sad

I have heard of and have almost every film you guys have listed, but there's a couple there I have never heard of. Terrific - more downloads for me. Smile

Alex, I have Triangle, and it's near the top of my list of "finally watch it" movies. Your commendation just bumped it up a little higher. Smile

Finally got to see Green Inferno a couple of days ago. A decent remake of Cannibal Holocaust, but as much as I think Eli Roth is a modern master, there just seemed to be something missing. I don't like how he keeps casting his wife in everything these days that he directs or produces though (Green Inferno, Knock Knock, Aftershock, and The Stranger off the top of my head). It's what Rob Zombie is guilty of, and as hot as both wives are, some of the movies could have benefited from better actresses.

You guys that like zombie movies, try The Horde. It's a cool foreign film that starts off as gang warfare, and ends up with the rival gangs and the FBI tracking them down all getting stuck in the same building during an apocalypse. Neat twist on the genre. There's also an African film called The Dead, which is very Romero-like, with zombies so slow, you wonder what the threat is - until they surround you and there's no where to run. Smile

You guys need to check out a home invasion horror movie called You're Next. It's more recent, and is one of the best of its genre, period. The twist ending actually works. However, by FAR the best of this genre is a movie called Funny Games. I have only seen the 2007 remake starring Naomi Watts and Tim Roth, but apparently it's a shot for shot remake of the original 1997 foreign language film by the same director. The remake is chilling and leaves a lasting impact - and by most accounts the original is even better. If there is one movie I recommend to fellow horror fans that may be more obscure, this would be it.

I also highly recommend [REC]. There was a US remake called Quarantine which was pretty faithful to the original, but just cannot top it. Actually, all four are decent, but Part 2 is a bit silly, and Part 4 takes it away from the original concept of 'found footage' and instead follows a lot of "security camera" footage. All of them are fun to watch though.

Just for fun, some 80's cheese that needs to be seen. Ghoulies, C.H.U.D., and Basket Case.

More to come.......

I've still not seen the Green Inferno yet, will have to watch that. Know what you mean about the wife thing though. Rob Zombie films just bore me now.

I can totally agree on the others though, The Horde and The Dead are both great films, I too loved the old approach to sow arse zombies Smile Nit sure if you know but there is also a The Dead 2 called India, not as good but still worth a watch.

You're Next and Funny Games are also both great films and yes Funny Games is quite distubing, but I had know idea it was a remake, I will definately have too track down the original!

Cool, I'll need to check out The Dead 2. Didn't know they made a sequel.

Michael Haneke directed both versions of Funny Games. The original was in his native German though, and is really obscure. However, even though it's apparently better, I hadn't bothered due to the 2007 version being the shot for shot remake thing. Just didn't think it was worthwhile. Maybe I'll get the original too just for the sake of having it. Smile

You seen both of the ABC's Of Death movies? Interesting concept. First one was hit or miss to me, and didn't care much for the second, but they are certainly a concept that if done better could be amazing.

Love horror movies. lots mentioned here I've never heard of. Will have to track some down. My favorite modern mainstream horror characters are Michael Myers and Jason. I'll watch anything with them in it.

My favorite movie of all time is the 1951 sci-fi/horror classic "The Thing From Another World". I also love the 1982 "Thing" and the 2011 follow up. 1958s sci-fi/horror "It! The Terror From Beyond Space" is another classic favorite of mine and the movie credited with basically being ripped off for the plot of "Alien", which I also love.

Another goofy 80s favorite of mine is "Motel Hell".

Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man. I could go on and on.

Carpenter's The Thing is my all time favorite horror movie. Hell, all time fave movie period. Even above ESB. I loved it so much as a kid that I would use my SW figures to re-enact that movie instead of SW itself. Han Hoth would almost always get the Kurt Russell "MacReady" role. Smile I own the Alan Dean Foster novelization, and have read the original short "Who Goes There?" it was based on.

The 2011 reboot/prequel was extremely under rated. Yes, a couple of goofy CGI bits were far inferior to the real props used in 1982, but it was a great movie.

The original 1951 movie I enjoy as well, but really should be considered its own film. It was only loosely based on the original story - but was very well done regardless. I loved the monster. Smile

The 1951 "Thing" only really uses the isolated base part of the original story. The 1982 movie took a second viewing to become a favorite of mine. Which seems to be the norm for me. A lot of my all time favorites didn't wow me the first time for some reason. I've only seen the 2011 movie once. I don't own a copy and it's not on Netflix Canada anymore. I'll have to get a copy and see it again. I'll do a "Thing" marathon!!

I own an original copy of the August 1938 Astounding Science Fiction magazine the story "Who Goes There" was published in. Funny thing is I've never gotten around to reading it yet. I can remember three different times I've sat down to read it and something comes up. Unexpected visitors, power outage and who remembers. I'm not even sure where the copy is right now. That'll bug me till I find it Evil or Very Mad I think I'll wait till a cold stormy winter night and read through it. That is if we get any cold stormy snowy nights this year.

All this talk of The Thing has got me right in the mood, just sat watching the original Thing From Another World now Very Happy

You said you used to play the thing with Star Wars figures which reminded me of a video I saw year ago. A music video made by a couple of French dudes, not quite Star Wars figures, but GI Joe is close enough, thought you might appreciate this though What a Face

Glad you liked Green Inferno. It was a slight disappointment to me, just because I had been following its production all through its troubled 2-3 years, and was hyped to see it. It was good, but didn't meet my anticipation level. Sad

That video is pretty cool. Smile Never seen that before.

I've done it before, but now I want to have a Thing marathon too. Smile However, I must have 60-70 horror movies I have yet to find the time to sit down and watch, so I need to concentrate on those first.
