We have a beetle known as a 'glow worm', but it is only the wingless females that have bioluminscence which is used to attract the winged males.

Wow James! The colour combo with the butterflies and the flowers are stunning. I have to show my wife this thread!

Fantastic pictures James.
I should have taken my camera to the beach, this past weekend. Lots of butterflies, bugs & birds.

Re: Mother Bugger !!!
A couple of nights ago I was out in the yard watering and pulling weeds and spotted what appeared to be a turd moving slowly across the grass
After close inspection I realized it was a cicada in it's nymph stage (and yes I always inspect slowly moving turds )
I picked it up and put it in a bucket of dirt with a stick for it to crawl on to . I finished my chore because I thought I would have time before it started to emerge but I was wrong .
Unfortunately when I checked on it about a 1/2 hour later it had already started coming out and I missed the initial burst .
Here is what I was able to photograph ...

Fantastic images James.
In my youth I used to watch damsel & dragonfly nymps climb out of the water in my parents pond, and be fascinated seeing the adults emerge & pump up their soft crumpled wings so they can harden off before they take to the air. Those shots have brought back some happy memmories.

Yep, from now and for the next few weeks is when mature Orb Web spiders are very abundant in UK gardens Andy. The big ones with impressive 'classic' spider webs are female.
When I was a zoo keeper, I used to get a lot of calls about the species shown below, as most people that came across one thought it was dangerous & exotic due to the colours.
Wasp Orb Web Spider (photo from the web, excuse the pun ).

Re: Mother Bugger !!!
Cheers Steve
Those colours just send out a warning
I have to watch where I walk there's webs everywhere, apart from removing a web that directly blocks my way to the greenhouse or garage ect, I never harm them they are only doing their thing and are good for the garden and stunning to look at
Some of the cheeky fuckers re build the web in the exact place I just carefully took it down

I have the same problem Andy. I frequently find a web that extends from the shrubbery to the wing mirror of my car. I feel guilty every time I have to drive off as the web is destroyed, but overnight they rebuild it, and so the cycle continues.

Thanks guys , glad you like the cicada pics
Great spider pic Andy
That's cool Steve
This was the 1st time I have got to witness the behavior in any insect so I was quite thrilled
I have posted some pics of a orb spider variety we get in our yard from time to time earlier in this thread ...
