James, that Bug Vader mask you found is... "Impressive, most impressive!" (I love the 'action' pic you took of the mantis too!)

It is about 1/4 " long at best and he was crawling across the lid of our large outdoor trash bin

Verbal threats
In this stage they are not very fast movers so he was a piece of cake to photograph

Do you still use the auto setting on your camera for these super close-ups?

Yes , all I'm smart enough to use is the auto setting
Luckily my camera is smarter then I am so it switches to the macro setting when I get close to the objects I photographing - the little flower icon will pop up on my camera screen anyway , which I think is the symbol for macro

Respect. I know we practically have the same camera. But I shake to much, in order to get such great close ups, like you do. I have to lean on something to steady my self when shooting stuff like this, and still don't get as good pictures in manual mode.

Re: Mother Bugger !!!
I've been using a small tripod thing to steady the camera which would not work for shots like that, great work James

I tend to brace my elbows on things if I can but luckily I have pretty steady hands , which is a miracle considering my daily coffee intake
I think what helps me the most is using the 2 second delay timer - it gives me just enough time to steady the camera after I press the button .

Re: Mother Bugger !!!
Never thought I'd see a Vader made out of insects lol hmm.
I definitely haven't paid enough attention to this thread James, you've got a great eye.
Here's a little guy I saw in Fort Mac Alberta a couple weeks ago:

Re: Mother Bugger !!!
Yeah the benefits of not having to buy my own gear lol that's the L series canon 100mm macro. It's actually pretty affordable as L series lenses come, around $1200 CAD. Still, it's not mine lol.
I haven't seen a mantis in my area in years, feels like I used to see them all the time when I was a kid, but then again lol I'm not playing outside as much as I used to
