That was a great article Rich. I even went and read thru the SWCA blog that you linked. It makes me want to get out my cardboard death star and put it together.

Re: Palitoy Death Star
I dug mine out of storage to check on some of the information that you and the SWCA told us about. It's a loose Canadian version, with the black bottom & the French text on the Trash compactor sign. I knew about the Canadian version having the all black base. But I didn't know about the french text on the sign, until I read the SWCA article.
As for the greatest play set ever? I'm not sure. I never had this as a kid. I always made my own stuff from card board and Lego's. I think this would have gotten a lot of play time from my 7-8 year old self. It definitely would be one of the best. I managed to pick this one up about 10 years ago, and never had a chance to put it together, as I don't have a place to display it yet.

Re: Palitoy Death Star
I had no idea the Canadian one didn't have all that printed detail on the floor. Very interesting.
If not the best, it's certainly the most expensive. It might be best if you exclude the falcon and deny it's dual status.

I enjoyed the article Rich
The Palitoy Death Star was definitely a favourite of mine I have fond memories playing at my friends house after junior school
Best ever I'm not sure, there were many great play sets and it would be near impossible to pick out just one
I never knew the Canadian version came with an all black base
