Schadenfreude
- German
Derived from Schaden (damage, harm) and Freude (joy).
Malicious joy, pleasure derived from the misfortune of others.
The origins of Malice....
The year of 2015 brought about a very special occasion, my first opportunity to meet some of my fellow collector friends, people I had known for some time, in some cases years. Meeting them in person was fantastic, the occasion was Sci-Fi Scarborough, a small scale convention in my town. 3 Friends made the trip to Scarborough and crashed at my house for a weekend of alcohol abuse and collectors talk. Picture from this weekend can be found here...

My guests where Marco (Dr. Dengar), Chris (Chris.75) And Stef (Walkie). During this visit, Marco purchased a book and while thumbing through it, landed on a page with the chapter title 'Schadenfreude' which sparked a brief discussion about it's meaning.... at which point we found out it meant Malicious Joy.... this became an in house joke for the rest of the weekend and has continued since..... mainly between myself and Marco
The purpose of this thread is just for fun, if you have an act of malicious joy that you have done, witnessed or just conjured up as an idea, then please share it here....Last edited by General Kahn on Fri Oct 23, 2015 6:38 pm; edited 1 time in total

The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From The Tree
[300][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/300]
This is the view from my back window. The yard belongs to an elderly lady who owns the flat below, as lovely as she is, she can be a little annoying sometimes You may notice the apple tree over hanging the yard, well every year it drops it's fair share of apples into her yard. The other day returned home and found a bag of apples outside the door, two days later another! Then a few days after that a third which came with a note addressed to my wife....

Yesterday an act of malicious joy just 'popped' into my head, the first picture taken is from my kitchen window, from here I can throw apples back under the tree My plan is to keep throwing the apples back, but keeping accepting them also, even when the tree is bare MAWHAHAHAHA

This was taken from a post Ian made in this thread : [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Now that's a act of Malicious Joy if I have ever heard one
Ian_C
I get a kick out of a CD I made that has nothing but cheesy 70's and 80's ballads from Air Supply, Neil Diamond, 10cc, etc., sticking into my car, then driving down the highway with the windows down and blaring that stuff at top volume while singing along in exaggerated expressions. I know most of the lyrics from my DJ days to all those songs, then just laugh my ass off at the looks I get from other drivers as they watch this guy with long hair and scruffy beard (you've seen the pic Bryan posted) singing along like a lounge singer. I really fuck them up by switching it out minutes later for my mix CD with Slayer, Sepultura, and Slipknot, and pull up beside them again but now in full headbanging mode.
Am I twisted?

Re: TXI.... The Home Of Malicious Joy
I have a similar act of malicious joy myself
I blast my music while driving all the time - always at least heavy or weird . I don't really do it to annoy people but just because I love loud music and don't give 2 shits what others think
I have 2 favorite reactions from other drivers though ...
I really like it when I see people banging their heads along with the beat
The most common reaction is to see them roll up their windows
But my absolute favorite is they roll up the windows and then LOCK THEIR DOORS
as if I am so evil they feel the need to protect themselves
@General Kahn and everyone else too :
I moved this thread from the Off Topic section to here because this is the type of stuff that really lets us get to know what really makes people tick
We all have outside interests that don't involve Star Wars (I know , Blasphemy !) - I know I personally really enjoy getting to know our TXI families outside lives and interests

I get the window rollup all the time too! That's awesome.
Generally, I just play music loud because that's how I like to hear it, and also don't care what others think. The situation I outlined earlier is just when that mood strikes me.
Oh, and it's not just music.
On Halloween, I tend to dress up as a zombie or other horror character, then walk the streets "in character". My own young kids are used to it and it doesn't bother them, but I get lots of reactions from other people's kids, and a few disapproving looks from their parents. My wife tends to join in on the "disapproving glare" movement, although on the rare occasion, I get her joining in.
Here's me as Michael Myers slashing my wife's throat. The lighting exposed the prosthetic, which was much harder to see in normal lighting.

And this was me and my son 2 Halloween's ago.

Fucking Awesome Ian
Yet another thing we have in common
My wife and I have been terrifying kids for years
You weren't a regular at TIG so you probably haven't seen any of my Halloween setup ... we (okay mainly me) love to scare children
Here's my costume :

and Me , My friend Curt (wearing my Myer's costume) and his wife who is generally just another victim :

but we're not all evil ...
These were taken the day after Halloween this year when a mother brought her kid by so he could see the stuff in the daytime

James is by far the resident Halloween guy. I keep telling him to open a haunted house. You should see his entire Halloween setup. I am sure it is on here somewhere. If not it should be.

Thanks man
Myer's is actually my all time favorite but it is followed closely by Jason and Leatherface
I have worn the Jason costume for the last few years because it is a little more intimidating and I spent a ton of time making the costume . I also make a better Jason then my friend Curt because I am fairly tall and he is a little short

Re: TXI.... The Home Of Malicious Joy
It's nice having common interests like this with someone.
Bryan, I would challenge any claim to Halloween - if funds would allow me to acquire what I want, and I didn't have a wife who works in daycare and is therefore concerned about scarring trick or treaters for life. I get to live it through another friend though. This year, we custom built three life size coffins, and he makes mummies to place inside them. And that's just the entrance to his garage. I think get all of us together, and we'd have the best Halloween party ever.
Btw, the Myers mask you see now was a cheap one I had back then. Now I have one close enough to be a screen prop, although annoyingly the hair seems to be shedding like a dog.
James, we could probably talk horror movies for hours on end. I get bored talking with most people, because they've pretty much only heard of Freddy, Jason, and Michael. Maybe Leatherface, if we're lucky, or Chucky. And those people inevitable consider those characters to be the scariest ever. I'd love to chat horror with someone who is familiar with some of the more obscure stuff.

Re: TXI.... The Home Of Malicious Joy
Start a Horror movie thread brother !!!
Besides you and I , there are several other big time horror freaks that I know are here for sure :
Nico (Andy)
Hellhippie (Bill)
General Kahn (Alex)
are all known horror fans
I am sure there are more guys here as well that are too
I do my best to find the more obscure stuff to watch but it is hard to find good movies without wading through a river of really bad ones . I would love to have advice on good movies to watch that I had not heard of
BTW - I make no claims to being the Halloween king , but since I was the only guy at TIG that really showed their love of it , they kind of dubbed me that
Frankly , I would rather share the title and nothing makes me happier then to know that I am not alone in my love of horror , Halloween and scaring children

Re: TXI.... The Home Of Malicious Joy
Friday The Halloweenth
Keeping with the horror theme that has been mentioned, it reminded me of an act of Malicious Joy I had about 7 years ago on Halloween. At the time I lived in a small village called Burniston which is on the main road between Scarborough and Whitby. It was Halloween and we'd had a few friends round for a party and of course fancy dress.
I donned a Jason outfit with a 'skin' mask I made to cover my hair and beard, kind of looked really freaky....
[400l][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/400]
Anyway, I decided to go for a walk out into the street, much the same as Ian said. Not far from the house, two girls walked round the corner on the opposite side of the road about 50 yards a head of on there way to the pub. One of them must have 'sensed' a presence and looked back toward me over her shoulder. The second I saw her head move, I stopped walking, so all she saw was me standing alone in the darkness, when she looked forward again, I continued walking, a few moments later she looked back again, so I did the same, this time I was under a street lamp so much more visible, stood still but I had obviously moved. When she looked forward again I continued to walk.
She must have said something to her friend and they both looked back, again I stopped dead. At this point they both just ran away It felt good haha

Nice stories guys.
Quite the Jason look Alex. The skin mask underneath is a stroke of genius.
Just watched the two Sounds of Horror videos. Fun stuff. Alex, you really were drunk filming those, weren't you?
I'll create a horror thread in a bit....

No dude, sober as a judge.... just mentally wrong
The Skin Mask is just latex, I painted my guitar case with latex then cut the sheet into pieces, glued and then stitched them together using leather cord.
I originally intended to create a Nosferatu outfit with some face prosthetics, so I cast my own face. Just pissing about one day, I poured some latex into the cast and made a partial copy of my face, a few weeks later I decided to make it into a mask after the Prosthetics idea was dragging.
I essentially did the same thing as the Jason skin mask, just glued and stitched bits of latex too it, this time though I made veins by dripping latex over it and building up the layers.
The teeth where a set of false teeth I found years ago

Re: TXI.... The Home Of Malicious Joy
Malicious joy, you say?
Joined my wife last weekend at her friend's cottage. They were there for a week while I stayed home. Best vacation I've had in years.
Anyway, their cottage opened up in the back right onto a nice river. I am not a swimmer. Just don't care much for it, although I'm not scared of it and can swim when I have to. My wife was in the water, trying to convince me to come in, and of course I'm saying no. Finally, I say what the hell. She tells me to go grab a life jacket. Are you kidding me? We've been together 22 years, and she insists that because I won't go in the water, I can't swim, and was saying I'd sink if I went in without one. I jumped in the water, still fully dressed, swam over to her, and asked her what size life jacket I'd need. Her jaw dropped, and I laughed nice and loud.
Malicious joy, indeed.
