1974 ? Banthrico Inc. Made In Chicago , Illinois (USA)

This cast metal Robot coin bank was most likely a premium given away by companies or banking institutions when a new account was opened . This bank was made by a Chicago based company called Banthrico which was in business from 1931 - 1985 .

Approximate Size :  6 1/2 " x  3 1/2 " x  2 1/2 " ( Weighs 1 pound & 7 ounces )

This bank was given away at a American National Bank in Riverton , Wyoming but they can be found with other bank /city / state stamps .

The bank shown above doesn't seem to actually have a date on it but found this photo that shows one that is stamped 1974 …

So the bizarre thing is , all the research I have done so far , indicates that these robot banks were made in 1974 - well before Star Wars was released .

It may just be a coincidence but it's pretty hard to deny that it looks like R2-D2 wearing a Darth Vader helmet    

The pattern on top of the head is particularly eerie to me  

Could R2 have been inspired by this weird little bank
