Unpainted Droids ... Are they Prototypes ??? Empty Unpainted Droids ... Are they Prototypes ???

Post by ourchickenshack Tue Sep 27, 2016 6:58 pm

It's NOT a Prototype !!!

It's more than likely a plain production figure that's been chemically stripped ...

[700][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/700]

Here at TXI , we really want to help the new collectors keep their hard earned money for more worth while purchases .  We want to try and show that most (if not all) the "Prototype" C-3PO's that pop up on ebay are nothing more then chemically stripped regular production figures .  The unscrupulous , dishonest sellers out there can easily pick up "beater" or "well loved" C-3PO's & Death Star Droids (DSD) for a few dollars on Ebay , Amazon , Craig's List , Kijiji , Garage sales , Yard sales or Car Boot sales .  Chemically strip the figures , and turn around and post the figure for sale using terms like "possible prototype", "I'm not an expert , but I've never seen anything like this before" , "found at an estate auction" , etc , etc , etc . Frequently blurry pictures & vague descriptions are used as well and the figures can sell for $50 , $100 or even more .

[700][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/700]

The most frequently seen color for "Fixed Limb" C-3PO figures seems to be the cream color but they can be found in a wide variety of mismatched colors . Regardless , since the figures would have a nice metallic finish in the end , the factories would use what ever color plastic they had available at the time and weren't concerned with what color plastic were cast in .

Don't Be Fooled !!!

As you can see , the metallic finish can easily be chemically removed by soaking the figure in a variety of various chemicals . After giving it a quick scrubbing with a tooth brush to remove the remaining metallic finish , it is not even that difficult to get the joints between the torso and limbs clean .  Some figures only need to soak for an hour , while others may take a day or two , depending on how much finish is left on the figure .

The same process can be done to the R2-D2 domes which also come in a wide variety of colors ...

Chemically stripping the droids is not always done for unscrupulous reasons . As several of us here at TXI are customizers , we have found that when re-painting one of these figures , a much nicer paint finish can be achieved if the old metallic finish is removed first . Once given a quick primer coat , the final paint job will be more detailed .

All the pictures above have been provided by Commander Clint and ourchickenshack .

Many of the stripped figures are from the collection of Trapped Texan (Bryan) who kindly allowed us to photograph them for this article .

The same chemical stripping process can also be done to the metallic finish on the C-3PO and R2-D2 figures from the 12 " line .

After doing a quick ebay search for "prototype c-3po",  this seller was found trying to pawn off this stripped 12" C-3PO .  The title reads "unpainted c3po prototype for intelligent starwars collectors" , combined with the blurry pictures , this auction screams from the start that it's a fake .  Even in the blurry pictures , the remnants of the metallic finish can still be seen , not to mention that the write up about the piece actually has very little description of the figure itself .  These are the types of things to look out for ... Do not buy them !!!!!!

Post by General Kahn Fri Sep 30, 2016 11:37 am

Fantastic write up James and great work from Clint and Bryan also on the pictures.

I actually know a guy who paid £120 for a "prototype" C-3PO and it was me who had the unfortunate task of telling him he just paid that for a stripped figure.

It's also important to take on board some other basic information and common sense when considering something like this.

The one my mate bought was advertised as a Palitoy C-3PO First Shot Prototype and this was not on ebay but at a convention with the fixed £120 price.

First of all it's important to know that Palitoy NEVER produced actual figures so there is the first red light. Secondly it still had the date stamp and COO. Now I am aware that some first shot's do still have this but the vast majority don't. The purpose of the first shot was to test the funtionality of the mould and see if it worked. Only when it was approved was the COO added, so most don't have this, so if it has a COO then more alarm bells should be ringing.

Finally, a little common sense goes a long way, any genuine First Shot Prototype of just about any figure in this day and age is alsmost certainly going to command a 4 figure sum on price. If something is being sold as prototype and only has a 120 price tag attached, you're either buying from an idiot or buying a fake.
Same goes for ebay auction, if you score it for 100 bucks, it's not a bargain it's just that the only people bidding didn't know either, the majourity did.

Another worthy note is that prototypes really don't just turn up in the wild, or very rarely at best, they came from or usually come from ex-employee's and have history and provinance. Most are already in the hands of collectors, so when the real thing does pop up, it's not likely to be from a 10 feedback ebay seller but from a noted and recognized collector or source.

It is often these tiny details that can be missed when you think WOW and that's a bargain.

THX a lot for this one. I really like, that you are just enlighten the theme instead of blaming those who are stripping droids just for the fun of it. I read a lot about stripping, that those guys make DSD and C3PO rare and expensive figures. Well personally I really don't like it very much and don't do it myself, but I do customs with beater figures which is pretty much the same. Nor I think market is getting empty with beaters in any way LOL neither stripping is comparable with U-grading in any way (by making originals rare). Most stripping guys are doing this just for the fun  of it when obtaining strange colours on those droids. Thats it. Unfortunately there are some odd guys - as everywhere - who try to make profit from this. This certainly sucks

The most interesting one to me is the chrome dome r2

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - I was wondering if it had a "painted chrome" finish that you had to strip off or did it just have the blue / red paint applied - basically using the chrome dome as is ?

James, I'm not sure.  I actually tried to scrub it after it had a soak, thinking the chrome finish was still stuck to it.  Then realized it was chrome plastic.  I have a 2nd one here with me as well.  Maybe they realized late in the production run, that is was easier to cast the heads in chrome plastic, than to have them dipped in a chrome finish??

Too bad you can't remember lol!

It does seem like a pretty interesting discovery though - it wouldn't make since to cast the heads in chrome and then put chrome paint on them . It would also seem logical that Kenner may have tried it at some point , probably later in production , possibly to save a painting step or to provide more durability to the toy scratch

Not that it means much , but I have never heard of such a variation personally , so it would be interesting to see if it is actually a known variant , just a one off or possibly even something new .

I checked all the R2's (only 20 or so beaters) I have in my possession and they all seemed to be molded in other plastic colors - none appeared to be molded in chrome . You can get a pretty good idea what color a dome is molded in by looking at the underside cyclops

Here are pics of the chrome dome you sent me :

[600][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/600]

Mine has some white plastic showing underneath in addition to the chrome confused

What does the one you still have look like underneath ?

James, It's raining / wet snow at the moment. So I'll try for outdoor pictures later.

I did have a better look at the dome in question & mine looks the same underneath, with the same white spots showing thru. I then nicked the neck stem with a knife and it's definitely made of white plastic underneath the chrome. So maybe they just came up with a more durable chroming process?

I also checked thru the rest of the beaters heads that I have. There might be a couple of sensorscope heads with the same chroming process. Let me throw them in the solution and I'll let you know.
