There were at least 4 different print versions of the 1977 Star Wars Program released in the USA . Due to the overwhelming popularity of the movie the demand for these was severely underestimated . Supplies quickly sold out at theatres leading to more copies needing to be printed . The different print editions have notable differences including paper used , cover textures , reorder prices , etc.

Please note that there could be other print variations but , currently , these are the only 4 we are aware of . For now the 4 we have found will be referred to as 1st , 2nd , 3rd and 4th print editions but this could change if any other variants are discovered .

1st Print

The 1st edition has a smooth "glossy" paper cover and interior pages with a $1.50 reorder price (located on the inside of the back cover page) . The pages inside are in a different order and the 1st edition has tan pages instead of pink pages that the later print editions had .

2nd Print

The 2nd Print has a textured "semi glossy" paper cover and interior pages . The cover texture has very pronounced dimples , almost like a golf ball . This edition still has a $1.50 reorder price with separate 50 cent postage fee (located on the inside of the back cover page) . The pages are in a different order then the 1st print edition and the pages that were printed on tan paper were changed to light pink .

3rd Print

The 3rd Print has a textured "semi glossy" paper cover but "matte" interior pages . The cover texture is similar to a orange peel . This edition still has a $1.50 reorder price with separate 50 cent postage fee (located on the inside of the back cover page) . The pages are in the same order as the 2nd print edition but the pages that were printed on pink paper changed to a darker pink and the photo image quality is lower .

The majority of the pages inside are identical to the 2nd Print edition so there is no need to show them again . The only interior change from 2nd to 3rd print editions is the reorder price and information printed on the bottom of the last page inside .

4th Print

The 4th Print has a textured "matte" paper cover and "matte" interior pages . The cover texture on this edition reminds me of the "Cross Hatch Pattern" found on vintage figure capes . The reorder price changed to $2.00 (which included the 50 cent shipping fee) . With the exception of the Reorder Price and information (on the last page) the interior is pretty identical and the pages are in the same order as the 3rd print edition .

READ magazine was primarily sold to schools in the USA for Teacher / Student activities and education . It was published bi-weekly during the school year from September through May . In addition to the student editions shown below there were also teacher editions available with more information .

The small magazines are made of newspaper quality paper and only have 18 pages .

This particular issue of READ was distributed to schools 2 weeks before the movies release date and features the early "Pointy W" Star Wars logo on the article that is inside .

There are 2 versions of this magazine - the 1st was sold at the theatre's and has a $3.00 cover price , the 2nd is a retail edition that has a $3.50 cover price and added a barcode . The only other differences I can see between the two is that the $3 Theatrical version is almost a 1/8 " wider and the cover is not as thick as the $3.50 Retail Edition - it's cover is made of slightly thicker card stock .
