The Matte finish bookmarks have a brownish black ink used on the back while the glossy finish bookmarks have more of a pure black ink :

Those are certainly the most logical explanations for the difference but , at this point , I have no idea which one applies

It's worth noting that the glossy bookmarks are very slick and glossy , much more so then shows in the photos .

The Ben bookmarks probably show the difference the best out of the 3 I have examples of both matte and glossy variants ...
