PRERELEASE and EARLY PROMOTIONAL STAR WARS ITEMS
Here a couple of theatrical promotional buttons from my collection.
The first, featuring the early "pointy W" incarnation of the Star Wars logo was handed out to theater employees and customers prior to the film's release:

The second is a "May The Force Be With You" button that was handed out to the first 5,000 moviegoers at select special engagement premieres of the film on May 25th 1977 (as advertised in the herald for the Charles theater in Boston):

Awesome buttons Steve
Is there any writing/copyright information on the edges or anywhere on either of those buttons ?

Unfortunately, neither button as any licensing information present. The first was most likely distributed by 20th Century-Fox to theatrical venues along with the film's teaser trailer during the Christmas season of 1976. Some great information about this and other collectibles of the pre-release era can be found here: Every Saga Has a Beginning: Star Wars Pre-Release Collectibles.
I also confirmed with Pete Vilmur that the MTFBWY button was the same style given out at the exclusive engagements.
I really love early stuff like this!

That is a awesome article man
Thanks to your fantastic post of the 2 promo buttons (which I didn't know existed BTW ) I immediately got on Ebay to look and I'll be damned if I didn't find both in one lot for $10
Although the blue May The Force Be With You button seems to be a bit more common the black pointy W Star Wars one seems to be quite uncommon (this was the only one I saw while searching) .

Even though they aren't in as nice of condition as yours I am super stoked to have found them and very appreciative that you posted yours and taught me some new stuff . BTW - I wasn't even aware that there was a Pointy W early Star Wars logo

Wow, nice score, picking that theatre campaign book up James. I've not seen that book before. It looks like an early one.

That's a fantastic find. Could you imagine getting a handout like this, 2 weeks before the movie came out in theaters.

Re: PRERELEASE and EARLY PROMOTIONAL STAR WARS ITEMS
The campaign book and READ magazine are fantastic, James!
I love the magazine's descriptions:
“Are you sick of seeing the same old movies with the same old heroes involved in the same old typical plots? Then we have just the medicine for you. It’s a new film called Star Wars, and there’s nothing about it that’s same. Or old. Or typical.”
What better way to put it?
I particularly like the following attributed to the Jawas and their mode of transportation:
“The dwarf-sized Jawas speak only in croaks and hisses and smell so bad that insects are attracted to their mouth and nose openings.”
“A spider-legged sand crawler ‘inhales’ the two robots and holds them in its metallic belly.”
Thanks for sharing!
