Death Star Droid - loose variants
in another thread chris (the 89th) said he had never heard of a smooth restraining bolt death star droid .me being a variant guy i'm always on the lookout for stuff ive never heard of either .
thought i should start a thread to show some variants on my 2nd favorite figure ever . even though i dont own alot (because there isnt alot of variants on him) he's still got some pretty interesting variants.
my 3 kenner dsd's
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
restraining bolt differences(circle on chest) one is 2 circles raised smaller circle, the other is flat and 1 circle big
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
rivet sizes smaller or larger
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
also notice the dsd on the end has a goldish hue , very noticeable in hand while the others are silver
and my good old meccano dsd thrown in for good measure

any others out ther id love to see !!!!

Re: Death Star Droid - loose variants
Very interesting, as it turns out my loose Kenner example has the large flat restraining bolt and my 20 back has the 2 circles with the raised inner circle. Learn something new everyday. Being a mold difference, I'm surprised I've never heard that mentioned before.

Re: Death Star Droid - loose variants
Just to complete there is another variant on the DSD. Second from left in my pic has rivets also on his left arm. Most DSD just have them on the right arm. It is not a very rare variant but a nice find IMO. Very nice thread. Hope there will come up some other Details as well.

Re: Death Star Droid - loose variants
Just a question for claryfing. Is it possible that flat restraining bolt and rivets on the left arm refer to the same mold and are actually the same variant? I'm not really sure as I have one DSD with no rivets but it is not clearly recognizable which restraining bolt he has. Unpropper mold...... ;-) on this

No Andi it is about the rivets on the front of the left arm. On the right arm they are common anyway.

funny ive seen people talk about a shiny silver and dull silver variant on him but I chalk that up to wear and age . does anyone have carded dull dsd's?

I believe there are just 2 basic mold families for the Death Star Droid . The most referred to variants are the " flat or raised " restraining bolts and the " rivets or no rivets ' on the left arm . In reality all the flat bolt variants have rivets on the left arm while raised bolt variants have a smooth plate (no rivets) on the left arm .
There are some other sculpt differences between the 2 mold families as well .
Here are side by side comparisons of the 2 families - in all the photos the Flat Bolt version is on the left Raised Bolt is on the right :

These are the 2 Basic Coo / Mold Family Variations :

However the coo stamps can be found in subtle variations :

The top line is the only version of the flat restraining bolt coo family I currently have to show but the bottom line shows 3 slightly different variations of the raised restraining bolt coo family .

Re: Death Star Droid - loose variants
Thanks guys
Bill -
which mold family does your Meccano DSD fall into ? I can't tell for sure from your pics but it looks like it may be the Raised Bolt / No Rivets on left arm family ?
Could you try to get a photo of it's coo ?
